500	Jan 23 to May 25, 1521	The Diet of Worms, Germany. The Holy Roman Empire held an imperial assembly, culminating in the Edict of Worms which branded the Protestant reformer Martin Luther a heretic and banned his writings.
400	Jan 28, 1621	Death of Pope Paul V. Succeeded by Gregory XV (on 9th February).
250	Jan 17, 1771	Birth of Charles Brockden Brown, American novelist. A major figure in early US literature.
200	Jan 4, 1821	Death of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born Catholic saint.
175	Jan 1, 1846	Death of John Torrington, British soldier and explorer. He died during an expedition to find the Northwest Passage. His body was exhumed from the permafrost in 1984 and found to be in almost perfect condition. (Cause of death: lung problems and lead poisoning from canned food.)
175	Jan 21, 1846	The first edition of the newspaper The Daily News was published in the UK. Its first editor was the novelist Charles Dickens. After a series of mergers, it ceased publication and became part of the Daily Mail in 1960.
175	Jan 31, 1846	The city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA was founded.
150	Jan 2, 1871	Coronation of King Amadeus I of Spain.
150	Jan 3, 1871	Henry Bradley was granted a U.S. patent for margarine. (Margarine was invented by the French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès in the 1860s.)
150	Jan 8, 1871	Birth of James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon, the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.
150	Jan 17, 1871	American inventor Andrew Smith Hallidie was granted a U.S. patent for endless wire rope – used in cable car systems. He established the world’s first cable car system in San Francisco, California in 1873.
150	Jan 18, 1871	Wilhelm I was proclaimed the first Emperor of Germany.
150	Jan 26, 1871	The Rugby Football Union (RFU) was founded in England.
150	Jan 28, 1871	The Franco–Prussian War ended. German victory. The resulting peace treaty, the Treaty of Frankfurt, was signed on May 10th.
125	Jan 4, 1896	Utah was admitted as the 45th state of the USA.
125	Jan 7, 1896	Birth of Arnold Ridley, British actor and playwright. Best known for playing Private Godfrey in the TV sitcom Dad’s Army.
125	Jan 8, 1896	Death of Paul Verlaine, French poet.
125	Jan 12, 1896	Three physics students at Davidson College, North Carolina took the first x-ray photograph in the USA – after illegally gaining access to a laboratory. Later that year, their professor, Henry Louis Smith, developed the technology for use in hospitals. (The world's first x-ray photograph was taken by German scientist Wilhelm Röntgen on December 22, 1895.)

80	Jan 2, 1941	World War II: Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff, Wales was severely damaged by a German bomb. Restoration was completed in 1960.
75	Jan 2, 1946	King Zog I of Albania abdicated as he was unable to resume the throne following WWII. He had been in exile since 1939. Prime Minister Enver Hoxha declared Albania a republic on January 11^th.
50	Jan 2, 1971	Ibrox Park disaster, Glasgow, Scotland. 66 football supporters were killed and over 200 injured in a crush on a stairway as they tried to leave the stadium at the end of the game.
50	Jan 2, 1971	Cigarette advertisements were banned on US television and radio.
40	Jan 2, 1981	British serial killer Peter Sutcliffe (the “Yorkshire Ripper”) was arrested in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. On January 5th he was charged with murdering 13 women. (See also: May 22, 1981 – conviction and sentencing.)
30	Jan 2, 1991	Sharon Pratt Dixon was sworn in as mayor of Washington, DC. She was the first female African American mayor of a major U.S. city.
